Emissions of particulate matter due to Marcellus Shale gas development in Pennsylvania: Mapping the implications

چکیده

Over the past decade, shale gas boom has led to increasing public concerns regarding communities' exposure air pollutants from development resulting in concentrations higher than EPA's National Ambient Air Quality Standards. This study investigates sufficiency of current policy Pennsylvania protect people fine particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions such development. We used a Gaussian plume model simulate PM2.5 over Marcellus region Pennsylvania, and using census block data, we estimated potential number who experienced exceedance standard between 2005 2017. Results demonstrate that these could increase exceedances by more 36,000 persons single year which is almost 1% regional population Pennsylvania. largely been proportional overall developed wells, but histories show similar levels occur with reduced exposure. Setback shown be an effective method reduce exceedances, results suggest it should revised based on wells per wellpad as well local conditions further limit quality impacts.

Life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of Marcellus shale gas

This study estimates the life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the production of Marcellus shale natural gas and compares its emissions with national average US natural gas emissions produced in the year 2008, prior to any significant Marcellus shale development. We estimate that the development and completion of a typical Marcellus shale well results in roughly 5500 t of carbon dioxid...

Atmospheric emission characterization of Marcellus shale natural gas development sites.

Limited direct measurements of criteria pollutants emissions and precursors, as well as natural gas constituents, from Marcellus shale gas development activities contribute to uncertainty about their atmospheric impact. Real-time measurements were made with the Aerodyne Research Inc. Mobile Laboratory to characterize emission rates of atmospheric pollutants. Sites investigated include productio...

Landscape Disturbance from Unconventional and Conventional Oil and Gas Development in the Marcellus Shale Region of Pennsylvania, USA

The spatial footprint of unconventional (hydraulic fracturing) and conventional oil and gas development in the Marcellus Shale region of the State of Pennsylvania was digitized from high-resolution, ortho-rectified, digital aerial photography, from 2004 to 2010. We used these data to measure the spatial extent of oil and gas development and to assess the exposure of the extant natural resources...

Life cycle greenhouse gas emissions and freshwater consumption of Marcellus shale gas.

We present results of a life cycle assessment (LCA) of Marcellus shale gas used for power generation. The analysis employs the most extensive data set of any LCA of shale gas to date, encompassing data from actual gas production and power generation operations. Results indicate that a typical Marcellus gas life cycle yields 466 kg CO2eq/MWh (80% confidence interval: 450-567 kg CO2eq/MWh) of gre...

Shale gas development impacts on surface water quality in Pennsylvania.

Concern has been raised in the scientific literature about the environmental implications of extracting natural gas from deep shale formations, and published studies suggest that shale gas development may affect local groundwater quality. The potential for surface water quality degradation has been discussed in prior work, although no empirical analysis of this issue has been published. The pot...
